In the proper soil and groundwater conditions, soil nail walls can be constructed faster and more economically than other retaining wall systems. Glass Fiber Polymer-Soil Nailing (GFP-SN), a new type of soil nailing. Soil nails are typically shorter than tiebacks for the same height of cut and thus may be preferable where there limited right-of-ways or property lines. Also, midst the seismic events, the bottom and top rows of soil nail commences greater axial forces as compared to the central rows of soil nail. It was found that the earthquakes have a remarkable impact influence on the horizontal movement of the soil nail walls.

Soil nailing can also be used where there are overhead restrictions, such as bridge abutments and power lines, as there are no vertical elements to install. The analysis was done by the help of a software namely FLAC3D. This minimizes the start-up time and makes soil nailing the best application for congested sites. Soil nail walls are usually built with smaller, easily mobilized equipment and without extensive steel fabrication. Soil nailing is not recommended in cohesionless soil, organic soil or cuts below the water table. One of America’s most accomplished soil nailing contractors, Schnabel has successfully constructed soil nail walls in a variety of different soil conditions. Soil nailing is used for the temporary support of excavations, construction of permanent retaining walls, and for the control of landslides. Soil nailing is installed from the top down as an excavation is made in 4 to 6-foot lifts. Shotcrete, reinforced with wire mesh and/or reinforcing steel, is applied to the face of the excavation to secure the soil between the nails. The conclusion can provide theoretical basis for the design and construction of micro pile composite soil nailing.Soil nailing is an in-place reinforcement of the existing soil/rock at a site that utilizes steel tendons grouted into drilled holes to create a stable block. The fundamental concept of soil nailing is to reinforce the soil with closely spaced passive inclusions to create a coherent gravity structure and thereby increase the overall shear strength of the in situ. FLAC/Slope 8.10.467 (and greater) is now freeware and is available at no cost. Soil nailing is a simple and economic slope stabilization technique and is particularly useful for the strengthening of existing slopes.

Based on the conclusions above, it is suggested that the micro pile spacing between 2D ∼ 6D is suitable for the micro pile and soil nailing composite support. FLAC/Slope can simulate stability problems under a wide variety of slope conditions, including: arbitrary slope geometries, multiple layers, pore pressure conditions, heterogeneous soil properties, surface loading, and structural reinforcement. When the micro pile spacing is 12D, the arch of the nails becomes smaller, sliding surface appears primitively. When the micro pile spacing is 9D, the arch behind piles will be failure, the soil flows around, but the saddle arch between the nails into circular arch, the supporting effect of the soil nailing is enhanced. The nail head coincidence pressure area and micro pile pressure area are overlapping to maintain stability in the soil between piles. The composite effect of micro pile and soil nailing will be the best and the soil arch behind piles will be firstly formed in 6D, the horizontal saddle soil arch will be formed between the nails. The soil arching between piles has been formed in the pile spacing 4D ∼ 6D.

By adjusting the micro pile spacing and analysing the displacement field and stress field of soil, we can find that supporting effect of the soil nail hasn’t work yet when the micro pile spacing is 2D. 5.4 Soil-nail Head Design Method Recommended by the UK Department of Transport 47 5.5 Typical Reinforcement Details of a Soil-nail Head 47 5.6 Typical Details of a Soil-nail Head for a Gentle Slope 48 5. Through the numerical simulation software FLAC3D, study on the synergetic effect of micro pile composite soil nailing will be studied.
